Moving into the depths of An Inspector Calls.

“It is a lesson in civics invested with tension and cleverly manipulated into the form, not merely of a well-made play, but a play so well made that each of its theatrical surprises extends and deepens the lesson. Alternatively, or additionally, it may be seen as an updated morality play, with Birling perhaps
representing avarice, Mrs Birling pride, Sheila envy and anger, Croft lust, and Eric lust, gluttony and sloth. It is emblematic and didactic and unashamed of being either… Try and see it in the theatre, because it proves that, in Priestley’s hands, a sense of responsibility can generate gripping drama.”
Benedict Nightingale (1982)

Hello Everyone,

In this post I will describe the work you will be doing on the play while I’m away.

Remember that you may use the Facebook group for questions but I trust that you will be using your common sense mostly. 🙂

Wednesday 6th – Tuesday 12th

You will work in 6 groups of 3. For this activity you have permission to use your cellphones. Use them wisely.

GROUP 1 (JOSE TASCA- IÑAKI TOLOSA – JUAN STORDEUR)

Your task will be to imagine an interview to the author of the play, JB Priestley. The interview must have the questions you imagined as well as a possible answer. There’s no limit of exchanges, do as many as you need until you feel it’s complete.

Do the interview on a sheet of paper in class. When it’s finished and revised one member of the group will pass it onto a Google Doc and share it with me. (eambrosini@lascumbres.edu.ar)

GROUP 2 (VICTORIA LUPI – LULI FRIAS – AGUSTIN REYNAL)

Imagine Hollywood has decided to produce a movie on the play: An Inspector Calls. You are members of the Casting Agency responsible for choosing the actors and actresses for the movie.

On a sheet of paper you will make your choices and then explain why you’ve made those choices. At home you will make a collage with the photograph of the actor or actress chosen and the role he or she will play in the movie.

One member from the goup will share the collage and the reasons for the group’s choices by email with me.

GROUP 3 (GASTON POSSE – AGUSTIN BRAVO – VICTORIA QUIROGA)

Your area of work will be music. You will first have to choose ONE scene (part) from each of the three acts that you consider significant in the play.

After making your choice, you will choose a special type of music or song to accompany that scene.

As homework, you will create THREE short videos with the words from the scene chosen and the music selected. Here’s a tool that you may use for your final product.

GROUP 4 (MALENA MILLÁN – FELIX OCKEKI – JUAN CRUZ SUBIRA)

You will work on characters, on two very important ones: Mr and Mrs Birling.

You will create a digital poster for each character that will include:

A drawing of how you imagine this character. (Using your imagination where there’s no info from the play)

FIVE quotations that best represent this character in your view.

A brief opinion of this character on the other characters in the play. You may include them in the post as THOUGHTS.

You may use Glogster for your poster, but you may use any other you prefer.

GROUP 5 (SOFIA MONTOYA – FRANCESCA COSTAMAGNA – EUGENIA KENNY)

You will work on characters, on three very important ones: Sheila, Eric and Gerald.

GROUP 6 (ALINA CLAPS – FELICITAS DONATO – MATIAS GIAMBRUNI)

You will work on a very significant character: The Inspector.

Research and include AT LEAST two “theories” that explain who the inspector might really be or who he may represent in the play.
